The most appropriately named locomotive to be seen at York was BR Peppercorn 4-6-2 No. 60147 'North Eastern'. In this April 1952 photograph, she is leaving York southbound past the Holgate race day platforms. The very smart appearance of the locomotive was typical of Eastern Region express engines in the early 1950s. It still retains the early plain chimney that was replaced by a more elegant 'lipped' version a little later. 60147 was built at Darlington in Apr. 1949 and was withdrawn in Aug. 1964.
