My only photograph of one of the Trans Pennine electrics, with the first of the EM2 Class number 27000 about to depart from Manchester London Road at the head of the 12.35.p.m. to Sheffield and Leicester on the 30th . May , 1956. A week spent with relatives at Leigh enabled me to make a number of visits to Crewe as well as spending some time that afternoon here at London Road , with a visit to Liverpool Lime Street being included as well . Passenger workings such as this across the Pennines via Woodhead ended in January of 1970 , such services thereafter being diverted via the Hope Valley line , although sister electric locomotives continued to work the numerous and heavily loaded freights , comprising of mainly coal and steel , until July of 1981 when these locomotives then became redundant and were disposed of. With the benefit of hindsight how I now wish I had taken a trip from here to Sheffield and back on one of these services whilst staying at Leigh with my great aunt and uncle, but I suspect they would have wondered what misfortune had come to me if I hadn't returned in time for tea !
