E311 1925c Sydenham Hill

E311 1925c Sydenham Hill

LSWR T9 4-4-0 No E311 in 1925c. The train has just passed through Sydenham Hill station (the platform starter can be seen on the right) and has just emerged from Penge Tunnel at the other end of the station on a Ramsgate - Victoria service.

Robert Waterman adds" I think this may have been taken in 1925/26. The line between Victoria and Orpington was, if I recall my historical dates correctly, electrified in 1926. The location looks to be in the course of this electrification. The third rail was for a short distance at this point laid on the outside of the formation on both roads in order to provide third rail contact continuity through the crossover depicted here. That on the down road can be seen on the far side of the down road, but the up side has yet to be laid indicating the electrification had yet to be completed. This would suggest that the train shown had started its journey at the old Ramsgate Harbour, which was closed in 1926".
