30310 1956-07-30 Fratton

T9 4-4-0 30310 leaving Fratton on 30th July 1956. The headcode indicates any train terminating at Portsmouth and Southsea, so this fails to tell us where the train has come from. It could be from Reading, Salisbury, Andover Junction or Southampton Terminus - or possibly Bournemouth, where 30310 was then allocated. The stock is a Bulleid loose corridor composite and a Maunsell open third in crimson lake and cream, with a Bulleid 3-set on the rear - still probably in malachite green as the slightly darker BR Southern Region green was only applied from June 1956 onwards. In the background is Fratton station with its long, covered footbridge, while the carriage wash plant is just visible beyond. Another steam-hauled westbound train is signalled away from the up platform and this has an LMS bogie brake van at the rear. Note the proliferation of telegraph poles (whatever happened to them?) and the tall starting signals with co-acting repeater signal at lower level.
