Ex-North Eastern Railway Raven 'S' (LNER 'B16/1' class 4-6-0 No. 61470. Built at Darlington in December 1919 as NER No. 1401 and withdrawn in November 1959.

As one of the finest early examples of a true mixed traffic 4-6-0, Vincent Raven's 'B16s' in unmodified form would have made an ideal contender for preservation. Indeed, I would argue that within the budget spent on a well-publicised 'new build' project, it would probably have been possible to produce a small fleet of them! It would have been more representative of railway history into the bargain! At least Falsgrave's fine signal gantry has been preserved at the NYMR.
