D5017 1959-06 Derby

A brand new Derby-built Sulzer Type 2 No.D5017 in early June 1959. It was one of fifteen loaned to the Southern Region pending deliveries of their BRCW Crompton Type 3s and did not return to the London Midland until May 1962.The Metrovicks behind it still have their wrap-around cab windows which were replaced from early 1961 with new window frames welded inside the originals and a more robust rubber seal installed to hold the now flat window glass in place. Although they looked quite stylish and offered good forward views for the train crew, they had been susceptible to dropping out at high speed due to excessive vibration.
