D5082 1962-05 Aston
BR Sulzer Type 2 D5082 approaches Aston Station on a northbound express freight coming off the Windsor Street Goods lines in May 1962, shortly before it was transferred from Willesden to Watford. The diesel entered service in March 1960, was renumbered as No.24082 in October 1973 and was withdrawn in 1979. The train was a forerunner of what would become the northbound 'Condor'. As well as the better known London to Scotland service the "Condor" name (derived from CONtainer DOoR-to-Door) was also used for the fast overnight freight service from Aston to Glasgow introduced on 17 January 1963.Ed Purcell recalls "The wooden platform at Aston was because the whole station was built on an embankment across the Tame Valley as far as Witton station. In wet weather the planks could be treacherous. The white object at the end of the wall was for locomen to call for attention at the signal box - which is just visible above the bridge parapet. The signals were replacements for LNWR ones after the second world war. From left to right they controlled Stechford line; Aston shed; Fast line towards NewStreet; Slow line towards New Street;Windsor Street goods and gasworks branch. My mother worked in the factory building to the right - New World Gas Fires - known locally as 'Johnny Wrights' "
