62060 1949-04-28 Carlisle Citadel

Ex-North British Railway Holmes 'M' (LNER 'D31') class 4-4-0 No. 62060. Built at Cowlairs in September 1890 as NBR No. 642 and withdrawn in February 1950.

One of only seven 'D31s' to survive into the BR era, 62060 is seen at Carlisle Citadel Station in April 1949. By this time they were very much in secondary use handling lightly loaded 'local' trains. Very occasionally they would be rostered to take a train over the Waverley line or even assisting a Pacific over the same route, as did the last of the class in service 62281 in February 1951!
