61803 1953-07 Boston Goods

Ex-Great Northern Railway Gresley 'H4' (LNER 'K3') class 2-6-0 No. 61803 an Immingham engine, departing Boston Goods South in July 1953 working one of the evening Grimsby-Kings Cross fish trains. The service finished around 1965 when it went by road. The bracket signal was operated by Boston Goods South box on London Road. Arms on left are for Down Main through road and the one on right for going into the goods yard.

The loco was built at Doncaster in October 1920 as GNR No. 1003 and withdrawn in July 1961. When new, the sheer bulk of the K3's massive 6ft. boilers impressed many observers. The locomotives were striking looking machines and this 1950s view sees 61803 only the 4th of the ten built by the GNR, powering away from Boston Goods. A further 183 'K3s' were subsequently built by the LNER.
