61921 1954-01-24 Doncaster Works

The massive bulk of ex-LNER Gresley 'K3' 61921 is really emphasised by seeing one of the class in ex-works condition. Nigel Gresley had instructed his draughtsman Harry Broughton to "design me the biggest boiler that will fit the frames". He did!
I had the privilege of being asked to transport Harry's original drawing instruments from Torquay to Doncaster on behalf of Peter Townend (ex-shedmaster at King's Cross) who was donating them to Doncaster's new 'Danum' Museum. Some honour! This photograph, taken at the 'Plant' is dated Sunday 24th January 1954.
