53808 1961-10-18 Shepton Mallet

S&DJR 7F 2-8-0 No 53808 with a southbound goods passing through Shepton Mallet Station on 18 October 1961.

Peter Kerslake says "Located just to the north of the Highbridge and Burnham on Sea branch with its junction at Evercreech 53808 has a mixed southbound freight including a lorry on a low loader in this view from Shepton Mallet in October of 1961.
Freights on the Somerset and Dorset were very much entrusted to the eleven Class 7F's which had been designed and built for that role and were destined to spend their entire lives on the line, save and except for rare trips to Derby Works for heavy and essential repairs to be carried out there, but also sharing passenger duties on busy Saturdays in particular, often working in a double headed formation.
Condemned and languishing in Woodham's yards at Barry 53808 was purchased for £2500 in 1970 and headed to Radstock Heritage Centre, later moving to Bishop's Lydeard for restoration where it can be found today".
