70024 1956-05-01 Laira Triangle

A pleasing evening shot of Laira's 70024 ' Vulcan' as it comes off its home shed to run tender first up to Plymouth North Road to work either an express parcels to Bristol, or alternatively an express passenger to Paddington. its fireman can be seen in the little hut having telephoned the signalman up at Lipson Junction for permission for his driver to bring' Vulcan' up on to the Southern line from Friary and the cleared signal is just visible. Laira shed, with its oil tanks, is shrouded in the customary smoke whilst the Council houses at Efford, on the skyline were part of the first post war redevelopment in the City.
