Peter Kerslake the photographer recalls "Laira allocated 70019 Lightning has steam to spare as it runs down over Trefusis Bridge at Lipson on a Paddington bound express which it has just taken on at Plymouth North Road station.
It's a down gradient past Laira shed which lies ahead, then a run along the Plym estuary before the hard climb to the summit of Hemerdon bank with its 1 in 42 grade from Plympton station. If my memory serves me correctly I recall this as being a Sunday photograph, hence the extremely lighly loaded three coach working to Paddington !
