49113 1957-09-27 Craven Arms

Ex-L&NWR G2A 0-8-0 49113 and ex-Midland Railway 3F 0-6-0 43679 outside the Craven Arms sub-shed of Shrewsbury on 27th September 1957. 49113 was at Pontypool Road from October 1955 until withdrawn in January 1959 and 43679 was at Shrewsbury from pre-nationalisation days until February 1959. 49113 was built as a G Class 0-8-0 1634 in 1910, rebuilt to a superheated G1 with Belpaire firebox in 1933 and a G2A with a 175lb per sq.in. boiler in 1939.
The 0-8-0s worked on the Central Wales Line from before the 1923 Grouping until just before the closure of Paxton Street Shed, being finally withdrawn in April 1958. Two 3F 0-6-0s were stationed at Craven Arms to work on alternate days the banking duty at Knighton. The one not employed on banking work took an early morning goods from Knighton, returning in the late afternoon replacing the L&NWR Coal Tank 0-6-2Ts or Midland 2F 0-6-0s on station pilot duties at Craven Arms. The sub-shed was closed when local freight services were withdrawn in May 1965.
