49109 1959 Winsford

49109 1959 Winsford

Ex-London & North Western Railway Whale 'G2A' class 0-8-0 No. 49109. Built at Crewe in May 1910 as L&NWR No. 1699 and withdrawn in March 1959.

This is the astonishing sight of some 20 or more withdrawn locomotives awaiting removal for scrap at Winsford in Cheshire. They are on the former Cheshire Lines Committee, Over & Wharton branch. The majority of the locomotives present are ex-London, Tilbury & Southend Railway Whitelegg '3P' 4-4-2 Tanks. No. 41298 is neaerst and the only one identified in the line-up. It is a scene that could not (and would not) be contemplated in our current society.
