Ex-London & North Western Railway Bowen Cooke 'G2' class 0-8-0 No. 49443. Built at Crewe in Aug. 1922 as L&NWR No. 2383 and withdrawn in Oct. 1961. This is the North end of Northampton Castle Station as viewed in August 1959. 49443 plods (wheezes?) south with a lengthy mixed freight, a scene that was largely unchanged from Victorian times when it was an L&NWR station. Within half a dozen years electrification, rebuilding and rationalisation was to change the unchanging!
