The Stephenson Locomotive Society ‘Sutton Coldfield Centenary Special and West Midlands Rail Tour’ train on 2nd June 1962 departed from Birmingham New Street at 2pm to Sutton Coldfield where it reversed as shown in this picture, going to Stechford via Aston, back to New Street and then took the LNWR Soho Loop line, on to Bescot, the Princes End branch, Tipton, Smethwick, and back on the Circle line to New Street. If that wasn’t enough, the participants then transferred over to a diesel multiple unit going to Bournville, along the canal branch to Lifford and Kings Norton, Halesowen, Old Hill, Stourbridge Junction and up to Wolverhampton Low Level before returning via Walsall, Water Orton and Saltley for an arrival back at New Street at about 9.30pm! Ex-LNWR ‘G2’ 0-8-0 No.48930 which took the first half of the tour, was at Bescot from August 1956 until withdrawn in December 1962.
