On an unidentified shed

2528 was originally built as a 3 cylinder compound 0-8-0 by Francis Webb in 1894. In July 1907 it was rebuilt by Webb's successor, George whale into a D class 0-8-0 2 cylinder simple loco by replacing the original low pressure cylinder with 2 low pressure cylinders and removing the high pressure cylinders. A much larger boiler was also fitted at the same time. Later it became a class G1 loco in Dec 1926 by fitting a superheater at which time it received its LMS no 9027.

Note the loco is in plain black livery and has acquired a Whale 3000 gal tender. Retains LNWR features in the form of cab roof, round topped firebox with apparent Ramsbottom safety valves and sanding to only the front and rear coupled wheels. The extended front sandbox was an identifying feature of the these Class D conversions
