49180 1959 Winsford
Scenes like this taken at Winsford in Cheshire, are hard to imagine in the 2020s. The sight of disused sidings and branch lines to dump lines of withdrawn locomotives was by no means a rarity and would have been manna from heaven for today's preservationists!
The six ex-L&NWR 'G2A' or 'Super D' class 0-8-0s had very long and useful lives but the need for fleets of ageing steam freight locomotives was drawing to a close. Identified are Nos. 49180 and 49226 both built at Crewe in June 1912 (as LNWR 2349) and March 1914 (as LNWR 131) respectively. They had been withdrawn in March 1959.
