Ex-LNWR 'G2' 0-8-0 No.49438 inside the shed on Armistice Day, 11th November 1962. Its tender is coaled and it has come in for examination but all is not well. The drawhook has been removed allowing access to the cylinders and there are cylinder rings hanging on the buffers. Chalked on the buffers are 21R and 20L. As far as we are aware, the G2 cylinder bore started out at 20.5" so the left cylinder has been sleeved at some time and the right one has worn. This would result in the loco 'shouldering' from side to side when working hard. It was officially withdrawn at the end of the month no doubt as a result of these findings. It had been allocated to Springs Branch since February 1959 after spending the 1950s at Carnforth. There is no logical explanation for the straw packed behind the handrail and smokebox securing dogs.
