A number of Westerns were built at Crewe including D1040 completed in September 1962 which would explain its shiny condition. Note the mineral wagons in the background which are also unusual in the station. Richard Bilton adds - the first few Westerns built at both Crewe and Swindon entered service without the normal small warning panels. The area around the buffer beam was painted yellow instead as can be seen in the photo. The Western had probably just been built and was out on test prior to entering service in the condition shown
