Peter Kerslake says "Not too good a shot of D1027 "Western Lancer" heading down to Teignmouth but the picture highlights the massive red sandstone cliff face before its appearance was marred by the ugly but necessary netting yet to come.
This location is Sprey Point, the site of a massive rockfall in 1839 when Mr Brunel and his men were working on the construction of the line, but Mr. Brunel made the best of things and built a wall round the fallen rock, levelled and tidied it all up rather than try to remove it all thereby forming Sprey Point.
There had been a cafe here at one time but it was apparently vandalised by soldiers during the war and the site today just houses a couple of storage huts for use by the gangers keeping the track clear and maintaining this vulnerable section of line."
