Peter Kerslake says "D1036 "Western Emperor" had been the second of her class to be built at Crewe which eventually turned out no fewer than fory four "Westerns" including five which had been scheduled for construction at Swindon but were diverted to Crewe where production was faster than at Swindon.
There's a formidable rake of wagons behind the locomotive and I think that this an eastbound working on the "up" line here at a very clean and tidy Chipping Sodbury station situated between Stoke Gifford yards to the west and Badminton to the east and this working may well have come from the extensive freight complex at Stoke Gifford.
Wayside stations such as here at Chipping Sodbury were invariably kept spotlessly clean and tidy and the "T" board and piles of rubble indicates that there's been some trackwork underway recently.
"Western Emperor" remained in service until early November of 1976, that year being a particularly sad one for the "Westerns" with a total of twenty six being condemned that year leaving just seven survivors at the beginning of 1977."
