In need of its forthcoming repaint. An interesting , if unusual , view showing to advantage the massive structure of Smugglers' Lane Viaduct and the formidable selection of rocks provided for protection of the line from the sea here at the westward end of Parson's Tunnel . The underpass here at the end of the sea wall walkway from Teignmouth provided pedestrian access beneath the tracks to Smugglers' Lane which climbed through the trees on the left up to the main A 379 roadway above . A signal box , built in 1884 , was located to the left of the locomotive , that box lasting until 1906 when it was replaced . That new signal box was closed after just three years but was subsequently reopened in 1934 although in the ' fifties it was in service on Summer Saturdays only , finally closing in 1964 with its foundations remaining in place.
