Dunlop No 6 1960s Fort Dunlop

Dunlop No 6 1960s Fort Dunlop

The well-known Fort Dunlop works were built on a 40 acre site in 1916, with sidings connected to the Midland Railway line to Water Orton. Traffic consisted of inbound raw materials and coal for the power house as well as the despatch of finished products. Strangely, an engine shed was never provided, locomotives latterly standing under the loading canopy when not in use. W Bagnall works No.2648 of 1941 is seen here running as Dunlop No.6. It arrived second-hand from the former Royal Ordinance Factory in Coleford, Gloucestershire in August 1965, was taken out of use when steam working ceased in 1971 and is preserved at Shackerstone, Leicestershire. Rail traffic continued at the Fort until around 1988.
