5964 1930s Crewe South shed
LNWR Claughton No 5964 Patriot is immaculate at Crewe South shed in the early 1930s, probably ready for an Armistice Day service given its condition. Built in 1920 as 1914, the L&NWR war memorial engine was renumbered as 5964 in 1926 and its black livery was replaced in the late 1920s by crimson lake. The extended nameplate had the name PATRIOT in bold, underlined, and below it IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN L&NWR EMPLOYEES 1914-1919. 5964 was taken out of service in July 1934 and the Patriot name went with it until it was revived and used on 5500. The flagpole and ornate chimney pots were unique to Crewe South shed.
