Ex-North British Railway Reid 'J' (LNER 'D30/2') class 4-4-0 No. 62418 'The Pirate'. Built at Cowlairs in April 1914 as NBR No. 409 and withdrawn in August 1959. Sir Waler Scott's characters from his Waverley novels provided many memorable names to railway locomotives. It is doubtful if many of the traveling public made the 'connection'. No matter - we enthusiasts understand their significance! 'The Pirate' is looking purposeful in May 1957 on this suburban train near Balgreen Halt in Edinburgh. Its scorched smokebox door may need some shed attention in due course. Avast there me hearties!
