42896 1963-10-13 Horwich

Ex-LMS Hughes/Fowler 'Crab' class 2-6-0 No. 42896. Built at Crewe in August 1930 as LMS No. 13196 and withdrawn in March 1965.

Horwich was once home to the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway's great railway works. The town never really elevated its passenger station to the grandeur that might have been expected. Instead it remained a very modest and unassuming branch terminus. With a dust of snow on the Pennines on Sunday 1st October 1953, the RCTS ran it's 'East Midlander No. 6 Railtour' with 42896. The return route was to Nottingham Midland via the Calder Valley, South Yorkshire and Derby Midland.
