42797 was renumbered during a Heavy General repair completed in June 1948. It was repainted in plain black with 12in block style cab numbers and 5F power classification immediately below the cab windows and 10in BRITISH RAILWAYS lettering on the coal railed tender. 42797 had been allocated to Sheffield Grimesthorpe since March 1930 but would move away to Holbeck in January 1951.
