42752 1950s Eastfield
A few Crabs were fitted with small snowploughs attached to the engine on the underside of the buffer beam; these did not project beyond the buffers and could therefore be left in position throughout the winter months. With these, the engines could run through small drifts whilst hauling normal trains, or as patrolling light engine, preventing the build-up of snow drifts; they were not intended to tackle snow deeper than 18 to 24 inches. Carlisle Kingmoor’s 42752 was photographed at Eastfield in the mid-1950s with a plough in place, but no sign of snow.
