42839 1960c Bromford Bridge
Evidence of the changes within just a few years in this view taken at the same place as No.48185 with large scale industrial activity replacing the hotch-potch yard and steel-bodied open wagons throughout the train as ‘Crab’ 2-6-0 No.42839 heads west towards Washwood Heath sidings. The picture was taken between 1959 and November 1961 while the engine was allocated to Burton. The signal box on the Down platform that controlled the approach to Washwood Heath closed in 1969 when the Saltley Power Box was commissioned.
Ed Purcell adds
"The flat area in the left background behind the train was the reason for this rarely used station. It was Bromford racecourse. The station only had trains serving it on race meeting days. Evening meetings were not uncommon in the lighter months."
