42936 1960s Oxley
‘Crab’ No.42936 and a Stanier 2-6-0 showing that the London Midland takeover of the former Great Western lines in the Midlands was well underway. No.42936 had been transferred to Birkenhead Mollington Street from Longsight in November 1960 and was withdrawn from there in July 1965. The January 1962 Railway Observer reported that “through workings of LMR engines to Oxley and other Western Region Midlands depots are increasing”. After the depot was taken over by the LMR in January 1963, the ex-Great Western classes lingered on for another couple of years with ‘57xx’ Panniers and ‘Granges’ fighting the rearguard action, but all had gone by October 1966 replaced by diesel shunters and Stanier ‘8Fs’ and ‘Class 5s’.
