Alistair Moffat says "A magnificent panorama of the layout at the outer end of the station. The old St Enoch locomotive shed long since replaced for that purpose survived to the very end, a ghostly place after the track had been lifted and you could walk out to see what had been. The lines to the left led to the St Johns loop which is still in use on rare occasions. The route joined the G&SWR to the NBR lines at College Goods (High St) and Bellgrove for Springburn or Edinburgh via Airdrie and Bathgate. The St Johns line passes behind the loco shed and formed a useful movements triangle for the terminus, where it joins the G&SWR mainline at the approach for the Clyde bridge crossing near Saltmarket.
The signal box I believe was a composite piece of Architecture. The ground level parts being from the original G&SWR structure the upper level dating from the 1930s when the LMS modernised the the signalling system with powered points and colour light signals said in the contemporary engineering press, to be at the very forefront of modern practice".
