David Hutton recalls "This is South Howden West cabin controlling the Selby Road level crossing. The South Howden East cabin was located just west of the station platform.
The regular Signalman was Mr Bunting and didn't mind us 1940's youngsters riding on the gates whilst being swung open to road traffic and, if there were only two of us, we were allowed up the steps into the box.

He regularly walked to 'man' both the Wressle and Asselby cabins. During WWII the Asselby cabin was 'manned' by a young lady called Muriel Bolton. My mother used to cycle to the box with food for her. I recall locomotives passing through in the dark with tarpaulin sheets shrouding the footplate glare from alien aircraft".
