DP2 1962-05 near Sutton Weaver

Sutton Weaver is on the route from Weaver Junction to Runcorn and was where a Down Goods loop commenced. In this rare shot, English Electric Works Number 320, the prototype No. DP2, was photographed on a test run from the Vulcan Foundry in May 1962. It was built against a British Railways specification for a Type 4 locomotive with higher power and lower weight than the BR Sulzer and English Electric Type 4s, but it did not appear until after BR had ordered twenty Brush Type 4s which quickly became the new standard Type 4. No. DP2 ran on the London Midland Region for just over a year before it was moved to the Eastern Region in July 1963.
