Peter Kerslake adds "Those pipes lying across the track have hopefully been put there after DP2's arrival as otherwise it has nearly run over them, but they look to have been there for some time! Released into traffic in 1962 it was a highly successful prototype,After working initially on the the West Coast Main Line between Euston and Carlisle as well as to Blackpool DP2 later saw service on the East Coast Main Line from and into Kings Cross. DP2 was damaged beyond repair whilst heading the midday Kings Cross to Edinburgh and Aberdeen express when it struck a derailed cement train at Thirsk on 31st July 1967.
