DP2 1963-05-13 Ansdell & Fairhaven

On the 8am Blackpool to Euston.Lots of waste ground in the foreground as the prototype DP2 is pictured on a working between Euston and Blackpool , a duty which it performed following introduction into service from new the previous year and after it had undertaken a series of initial runs between Euston and Carlisle . Later this same year DP2 was moved to the Eastern Region , working between Kings Cross and the North and it was upon such a northbound passenger express on 31st . July 1963 that DP2 came to grief when a cement train running ahead on the down slow line at Thirsk became derailed due to a failure of one or more of the tank wagons . The driver of DP2 performed an emergency stop but his locomotive and a number of his passenger coaches struck the derailed cement wagons and were badly damaged and DP2 was later condemned and cut up at Newton Le Willows in 1968 , although its single Diesel power unit was salvaged and used later on two of the later class 50 locomotives.
