DP2 1962 Rugeley

DP2 1962 Rugeley

It ran on LMR from mid-1962 until mid-1963. This picture was An immaculate No.DP2 passes through Rugeley on a London bound express in 1962.The English Electric owned 2700bhp prototype ran on the London Midland Region from May 1962 until mid-1963. It was built as Deltic construction at Vulcan Foundry was drawing to a close and utilised a Deltic style body-shell, although with greatly different engine and traction equipment. While on the London Midland, No.DP2 successfully worked an intensive six days a week cyclic diagram between London Euston and Liverpool and, from May 1963, Blackpool. In June 1963 it was moved to Finsbury Park and was allocated to the 'Deltic' pool where it worked turn and turn about with its more powerful brethren. Its career came to an abrupt end in a collision at Thirsk in July 1967, not before it had led to an order for fifty locomotives of what soon became Class 50s. Unfortunately the excellent and well-proven design of the prototype was ruined by the addition of several untried features.
