Holborn Viaduct 1950s

Holborn Viaduct 1950s

The original platforms were short because the LC&DR designed them for half-length trains because it divided its Up services at Herne Hill into separate City and Victoria portions.
The short Platforms 2, 3 and 6 were not electrified because unlike Platforms 4 and 5 they could not be extended to take eight-car trains in 1925 when the station was prepared for the introduction of electric services in 1926. Platform 1 was not dealt with until 1939 when, at considerable expense, it was lengthened to accommodate an eight-car set. The three non-electrified platforms were used primarily for parcels traffic and were removed in 1973 and the track removed.
