The first of the two sections of the twenty six mile line from Tyne Dock to Consett where banking assistance was required for Consett bound iron ore workings was here at the immediate exit from the Dock up to Tyne Dock Motive Power Depot with its one in forty gradient , followed by a second much longer stretch from South Pelaw to Leadgate , some eight or nine miles in length.
Locomotives working the line , including the Standard Class Nines , would be rostered on a daily basis to both train engine and banking engine duties with bankers stationed at South Pelaw having to make regular runs back down to their home shed for recoaling and the like , running back between the many loaded iron ore workings
