Standard 82020 makes a fine picture as she runs into Portmadoc station heading an up working from Pwllheli towards Barmouth Junction , with part of the extensive freight yard complex visible on the left beyond the station .
Portmadoc was an important centre for freight traffic , with crew changes being very much the order of the day here and the majority of locomotives working passenger services would take water here whilst halted at Portmadoc , a large water tank being in place behind the station buildings n the down side.
The Standard class three's were found to suffer the same weakness of the former Great Western " 4500 " class of the past , namely limited water capacity , and were later replaced by the larger Standard " 82000 " class , with their increased water capacity
