6000 1933-07 Crewe Works
LMS 5XP 4-6-0 No.6000 nearing completion at Crewe Works in July 1933; the works plate on the front framing reads ‘LMS, REBUILT, 1933, CREWE’. All except the first twelve engines entered traffic with angled smoke deflectors. The cover between the front frames is not yet fitted, revealing the inside steam chest cover and valve spindle. The piston and valve spindle glands were pressure-fed with oil from six of the twelve feeds of the Silvertown mechanical lubricator on the right-hand platform. 6000 became 5538 in August 1934 and was named Giggleswick in honour of the Yorkshire public school, in 1938.
