After the L&SWR M7 0-4-4Ts, which had been used on the Swanage branch for many years, were retired in May 1964 several Ivatt 2-6-2Ts were transferred to Bournemouth to replace them. 41295, at the branch terminus in 1965, was a late arrival in November 1964; Hampshire DEMUs took over the line from steam in September 1966.
