41289 1956-09-29 St Helens Central

The Ivatt 2-6-2Ts were a popular choice for the enthusiast railtours which ran almost every weekend in the 1950s. In this picture 41289 has stopped at St Helens Central (the former Great Central terminus closed to passengers in 1952) while working the RCTS (Lancashire & NW Branch) ‘South Lancashire Coalfield Rail Tour’ on 29 September 1956. The tour did not go to plan and the passengers were each refunded 5/- by the LMR. The RCTS treasurer wrote to them in a letter which stated, ‘Following the extremely unsatisfactory happenings which marred this tour’; said happenings were not elaborated on because presumably the passengers were fully aware of the problems. 41289 was at Sutton Oak from February 1952 until April 1961.
