Peter Kerslake says "Situated between Pwllheli and Criccieth , on a windswept terrain on the level with the Waters of Tremadoc Bay , this station at Afon Wen was open to the worst that the winter weather could throw at it , and this view is taken from the eastern side , looking down the line westwards .
Afon Wen was the junction of the former LNW / LMS line running southwards to here from Caernarvon and North Wales and as such remained an important junction , in its heyday handling many holiday express workings from the North destined for Butlins at Pwllheli and further south to Aberystwyth , and Saturdays especially at Afon Wen meant dealing with a continuous stream of heavily loaded such workings .
By the Motive Power in this view it appears that this working has come down from the North as combinations of the Fowler , Stanier and Standard classes were the usual form of Motive Power down to this important Cambrian junction"
