41275 1960s Gunnislake
As 41275 left for Wadebridge in January 1963 this view is from after September 1961 and before 1963. The line would still have run on from here at Gunnislake to the terminus at Callington, but from 1966 trains from Bere Alston via Calstock terminated here . Alternative road transport difficulties, especially during the Winter months, afforded the line from Plymouth to Bere Alston, Calstock and Gunnislake a reprieve in 1966 with little or no form of alternative means of transport, particularly for the workers commuting daily to Plymouth and returning to this remote and rather isolated area on the borders between Devon and Cornwall. The line still operates today, crossing the upper reaches of the River Tamar at the historic little port at Calstock by means of the impressive viaduct, services being operated from Plymouth on what is now known as the Tamar Valley Line, taking some 45 minutes for the fifteen miles between Plymouth and Gunnislake, with a reversal taking place at Bere Alston. Alex Seal addsIt's possible that this was actually taken after the closure of the like to Callington or that there were trains that terminated at Gunnislake at least. The engine is actually at the wrong end of the train for the line it's on, and it appears that the fireman has just stepped out from in between, so it looks to to me like it has just run round the train!
