The location is Derby Road Crossing -- a little closer to Derby than Egginton Junction. This is where the A38 used to cross the ex-North Staffs line on the level. The signal box here wasn't a block post, it was supervised by Willington Crossing (whose up distant can be seen still 'on' beneath Derby Road's home signal). Of particular note are the spare set of gates. Lying in a bit of a dip on this always very busy road, it was especially prone to mist patches. Road vehicles running through the gates was a very common problem. The level crossing was replace with an overbridge in 1966.

D5 is working a St Pancras-Manchester express, the early Peaks only briefly worked these trains but is here off the normal London - Manchester routes, on the Derby - Birmingham line. Presumably this is one of the Sunday diversions away from Euston due to electrification works. Diverted trains ran via Stoke on Trent, Tutbury, Egginton Junc, Stenson Junc, Castle Donnington, Sheet Stores Junc. and Trent South Junc. to St. Pancras.
