BR Sulzer �Type 4� No. D4 Great Gable at Tamworth in 1961 near the end of its brief two year spell on the West Coast mainline. Great Gable is located just north of Scafell Pike and is 2,949 feet high and its impressive outline led to it being chosen as the centre piece in the motif used by the Lake District National Park. The first ten locomotives, Nos.D1-D10, were all named after prominent British mountains and peaks, resulting in the whole class including the later examples being given the nickname �Peaks�. Along with the other nine Pilot Scheme locomotives in the class, No.D4 was transferred to Toton in early 1962. Great Gable became No.44004 under TOPS in April 1974, and after withdrawal in 1980 it was preserved at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley.
