70009 1964-04 Perth

BR Britannia Pacific No 70009 Alfred the Great departs from Perth with the 4.45pm fish train to the south in April 1964.

Peter Kerslake says "A quiet Perth here in April1964 as 70009 "Alfred the Great" waits on an express fish working, this view showing its additional lamp irons mounted inside the smoke deflectors, a reminder of its month spent on the Southern Region in June1951.
Allocated from new in May1951 to Norwich depot the engine was one of the unfortunate "Britannias" at Norwich to be despatched to the freight locomotive depot at March in Cambridgeshire in September1961 in an ill conceived move which saw the majority stored out of use with no work available for them there.
Salvation came in 1963 with the wholesale move of all the former Eastern Region "Britannias" to the Midland Region with 70009 heading to Carlisle Kingmoor in December1963 from where it was finally condemned in January1967."
