'Unique' 1969-03-28 Sittingbourne
Fireless loco ‘Unique’ built 1923 by W G Bagnall. Works no 2216. The reservoir held steam at 220lbs/sq in. It was charged from the Mill’s high pressure steam supply and could run for 8 hours between charges. It was used to shunt areas where fire risk was greatest, mainly within Kemsley Mill itself. ‘Unique’ was built to a standard gauge design but with the wheels placed inside the frames to 2’6” gauge. Narrow gauge fireless locomotives in UK were very rare machines.
